Why Charollais Sheep?

Having worked on sheep farms for most of his life Dougie has been able to view various pedigree breeds, cross bred flocks and different management systems used. His choice was for us to breed Charollais because of their:-

  • Ease of lambing
  • Superb conformation
  • Superior lean meat production
  • Fast growth rates
  • Ready market.

Our Methods.

Each year we select about 15 of our best breeding ewes for lambing in December and use semen from nationally recognised rams who must be ARR/ARR, have a very high EBV index and carry the MyoMax Gold gene as well as naturally serving some ewes with our stock rams.

The December lambs are both for the pedigree ram lamb sales at Worceter and Builth 2 and also for sales off farm but we ensure that only the outstanding lambs are retained which are chosen for their conformation and index figures.

The rest are culled to catch the Easter lamb trade.

We have a second lambing in March for the rest of our flock aiming to produce shearling rams and some shearling ewes for sale the following year.

The December lambing ewes are housed from mid November and after lambing stay inside with their lambs until the weather allows them to be outside, usually during February and they are generally weaned by 12 weeks.

The March flock are put out to grass almost immediately.

Our aims and standards are high so we are assiduous in culling out all those lambs we believe will not meet our exacting standards and there is always a ready market for good Charollais fat lambs both at the market and off farm for the freezer.

The lambs soon attain the optimum weight of 40kg, often within 12 weeks,.
